Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) Student Exchange

Washington residents can enroll in eligible programs in 14 western states at reduced tuition rates through the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) student exchange programs. Participating states include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming.

Western Undergraduate Exchange

Undergraduate students can enroll at participating two- and four-year colleges and universities. Students pay 150 percent of the receiving school’s resident tuition, a significant savings over nonresident tuition.

Western Regional Graduate Program

Graduate students can enroll in graduate programs at resident tuition rates.

Professional Student Exchange Program

Students can receive conditional loans to study optometry or osteopathy, two professional degree programs not offered in Washington. In return, participants agree to practice in a state shortage area.In 2005-2006, optometry students will receive $13,300 awards and osteopathy students will receive $16,600 awards.  The state will forgive one year of the loan for every one year of service with a minimum service commitment of three years. Awards are available for up to four years.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must be a Washington State resident. Some colleges and universities also have additional criteria, such as ACT/SAT test scores or high school grade point averages.

How to Apply

Western Undergraduate Exchange

Apply directly to the schools you want to attend and request admission as a “WUE student.”

Western Regional Graduate Exchange Program

Apply directly to the schools you want to attend and request admission as a “WICHE student.”

Professional Student Exchange Program

Applications are available from the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board and are due by October 15 in the year prior to enrollment.
