Students searching for scholarships often have difficulty finding information about the many opportunities available in Washington because there is no central clearinghouse for scholarship information.  In addition, well-known web search engines often recommend an overwhelming number of scholarship possibilities mostly based on a student’s profile, instead of eligibility.

Scholarship providers face similar challenges reaching students. Unfortunately, an estimated $100 million in national scholarship assistance goes untapped each year.

Designed to be a one-stop-site, theWashBoard.org is a free, student-centered, online clearinghouse for Washington students seeking college scholarships. This user-friendly site allows students to search and apply for verified scholarship opportunities that are specific to their academic interests, college or university, or other criteria.

Scholarship providers will benefit from the increased exposure, reduced paperwork, and access to statewide scholarship data.

Support for theWashBoard.org comes from the Washington Scholarship Coalition. The Coalition is a public/private collaboration of the Higher Education Coordinating Board, The Seattle Foundation, Independent Colleges of Washington, the Northwest Education Loan Association, Washington Spark, College Success Foundation, and the College Planning Network.

The new website will be launched to students in late fall 2009, and maintained by the Higher Education Coordinating Board.

  Some unique features of theWashBoard.org:

  • It includes verified scholarship opportunities specifically for Washington state students.
  • It is FREE to students and scholarship providers.
  • It is web-based, reducing the need for paper applications and forms.
  • There will be no advertising and no personal information will be made available to any commercial enterprise.
  • It encourages the use of a common profile to encourage individual students to apply for multiple scholarships at one time.
  • It enables donors to reach thousands of students statewide, making it easier for new providers to consider offering scholarships.
