GEAR UP for Student Success School Coach

Contract Period: August 18, 2008 – June 26, 2009

Washington State GEAR UP

GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. GEAR UP is a partnership of the Higher Education Coordinating Board, Office of the Governor, the University of Washington, College Success Foundation, and a number of national, state, and local organizations.

Washington's GEAR UP program encourages low-income middle and high school students to stay in school, study hard, have high expectations, and go to college.

The new program focuses on preparing 1,000 low-income seventh graders for college success by providing intensive tutoring, mentoring, and college/career planning information throughout their middle and high school years.

The University of Washington offers professional development activities for teachers, and summer institutes for GEAR UP students.

GEAR UP also supports College Success Foundation’s outreach and counseling support services at 16 selected high schools in the state. The services are aimed at helping low-income and disadvantaged students participate in postsecondary education.

Accomplishments

With the first GEAR UP grant (1999-2006):

  • We successfully enrolled 74 percent of our high school graduates in higher education programs.
  • We hosted several Summer Institutes at the University of Washington, allowing nearly than 4,000 GEAR UP students to experience life on a college campus; and
  • We built a comprehensive, long-term advising and assessment program in partnership with ACT, allowing us to measure individual student progress over time and help students better prepare academically for college.
