AmeriCorps

AmeriCorps is a national service program that allows people of all ages and backgrounds to earn money for college in return for a year of community service.

AmeriCorps members can work before, during, or after college and use the money either to pay education expenses or to repay federal student loans. Members meet community needs with services ranging from renovating houses and teaching English to policing neighborhoods and restoring salmon habitats.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 17 years old;
  • Be a U.S. citizen or legal resident alien; and
  • Have a high school diploma or equivalent or agree to get one during service.

Benefits

Full-time members contribute 1,700 hours of service within one year in return for:

  • An educational award of $4,725.
  • A living allowance, which varies slightly from program to program.
  • Health care benefits.
  • Child care for those who qualify.

Part-time members contribute 900 hours of service within one year in return for:

  • An educational award of $2,363; and
  • A living allowance, which varies slightly from program to program.
