Approving, Authorizing and Evaluating

Washington laws require the Higher Education Coordinating Board to oversee more than 100 public and independent colleges and universities in Washington to ensure their courses and programs meet state standards.

Approval of new and review existing degree programs - We review and approve degree programs at the state’s public four-year universities and colleges -- to ensure that they meet the needs of students and are wise investments of state resources. A key aspect of our role is the planning and coordination of academic programs and off-campus facilities, teaching sites, and centers.

For more information see: Program and Facility Planning

Degree Authorization - To protect citizens from fraudulent and deceptive practices, we authorize out-of-state colleges and universities, and some in-state private colleges and universities, to offer degree programs in Washington.

Approval of Veterans' Programs - We also approve educational and occupational training programs for veterans’ educational benefits.
